Getting around Paris

Paris is one of the most walkable capitals in Europe — most of what you want to see is within an hour on foot. For everything else, the metro is your friend: 16 lines, trains every 2–4 minutes, a single ticket at €2.15 or a carnet of 10 at €17.35.

From the airport, we recommend Allocab for a comfortable private transfer (around €60 from CDG to central Paris, €40 from Orly). For shorter distances within the city, Vélib' bike-share is everywhere — €5 for a 24-hour pass.

Taxis pay attention to traffic; Uber and Bolt work seamlessly. For Paris-region trips (Versailles, Disneyland), the RER B and C trains start in the city center.

Where to stay in Paris

Le Marais (3e–4e)

The historic Jewish and gay quarters merged into Paris's most charming neighborhood. Cobblestone streets, private mansions, the Picasso Museum, vintage boutiques, and falafel at L'As du Fallafel. Stay here if you want lively streets, walking distance to everything, and the most photographed corners of the city.

Saint-Germain & Latin Quarter (5e–6e)

Left Bank elegance. The Latin Quarter has the Pantheon, Sorbonne, and the medieval streets where Hemingway and Sartre once drank. Saint-Germain has the literary cafés (Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots), the Jardin du Luxembourg, and quiet residential streets that feel timeless.

Montmartre & the 9e

Up the hill, Montmartre keeps its village feel: Sacré-Cœur, Place du Tertre, vineyards in the back streets. Below, the 9e is having a moment — Pigalle's South Pigalle (SoPi) is full of natural wine bars, indie shops, and our favorite cinema, Le Louxor. Stay in the 9e for nightlife and bistros, the 18e for views and quiet mornings.

Eiffel Tower & the 7e

Wide boulevards, museums (Orsay, Rodin, Quai Branly), and the most photographed view in the city. The 7e is calm in the evening — better for a quiet retreat than a night out.

Center West (1er, 2e)

Louvre territory. The 1er is grand (Palais Royal, Tuileries, place Vendôme), the 2e is hipper (Passage des Panoramas, Sentier startup district). Both are central, walkable to almost everything.

Top experiences in Paris

Beyond the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower (which you'll do anyway), here's what we send our guests to.

Visit the Musée d'Orsay early on a Thursday — late opening, no crowds. Walk the Coulée Verte (the elevated park that inspired NYC's High Line). Have lunch at the Marché des Enfants Rouges, the oldest covered market in Paris. Take the metro to Buttes-Chaumont for the most underrated park in the city.

If you have a clear evening, climb to the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette (free) for a 360° view that rivals the Eiffel Tower — without the line. End the day with a glass of something at a café terrace, anywhere with chairs that face the street.

When to visit Paris

April–June and September–October are the sweet spots: long days, mild weather, gardens in bloom, fewer tourists than peak summer. July and August can be magical (the city empties of Parisians) but many restaurants close for vacation.

Winter has its own charm — Christmas markets, fewer queues at museums, that low December light. Skip late February (cold, grey) and the last week of August (everything closed).
